“Nova… stars… Greek?” Slip questioned, then smiled when Jack nodded at him. “I’ve never heard of a Scavenger before.”

Jack motioned nonchalantly toward the opposing deck. “Chances are they have one too.”

“Why do you say?”

“This,” Jack flipped the cube in hand, “contains enough condensed wood to create a full-blown battle ship, without the weaponry, of course. And do you know what was on my Skin charger? A Base Building ekto-strap with the blueprints for exactly that. A battle ship. Sponsors paid big tonight, friend. And I am already big-time in the green.”

“I see. So, Scavengers can build?”

“All classes can build if they train. But at our low-mid ranks, Scavengers are generally the best equipped to build fast. We have a Ballista here too. She’s hiding around here somewhere. But she’s more for projectiles and quick-build weaponry. I’m more… well… different.” He deconstructed the cube and created a giant totem with a middle-finger atop it pointing toward the enemy team, and then rewound the wood particles back to its original shape.

“Hah. Were you a Fieldy? You must’ve been a Fieldy.” Slip plopped a seat beside him on the ledge.

“Field three, six years. Parents were treasure hunters before they got caught. Now they sit in a Sci-camp suffering Tech knows what.”

“And now… ladies and gentlemen… without further ado!” the announcer’s voice projected far. “We will reveal this quarter’s Megalux Arena event!”

Whistles and cheers sounded, making Slip notice the arena now fully packed. Not one empty seat that he could count. Not one. In fact, there were stragglers crowded near the exits too, lingering until Den security kicked them out.

Slip couldn’t believe his eyes as he craned his neck. He was in the middle of a floating amphitheater plagued with sea moss and seaweed hanging off the marble stands – probably for effect – and was about to participate in a group event.

He gulped. The stands climbed for what felt like a mile. Fifteen, no seventeen sections up, each one holding at least ten rows that stretched for three quarters of a wide circle.

“Contenders! On your feet!” the announcer demanded. “Always wanted to say that.” He earned a chuckle. “Tonight you are performing for no Ancient, no sponsor. Tonight you are participating in this mega event only for your fans’ entertainment. Allow them to drink to you, to curse you, and to watch you die!”

Slip elbowed Jack. “Uh oh. Sounds like no Heph protection tonight.”

“Mm.” The idea didn’t sound thrilling to Jack.
